Illinois residents may soon be able to present state identification by opening an app on their smartphone or smartwatch. The Illinois Secretary of State office has announced a goal of launching their initiative for residents to be able carry digital driver’s licenses and state ID by the end of this year.
How will the IDs work?
The digital IDs will not be mandatory and will serve as a companion to the physical card, rather than a replacement. Residents will be able to present their driver’s license and State ID using their iPhone or Apple Watch by opening the “Apple Wallet” application on their device. Users will be able to do this without taking out their physical card or handing over their device.
What if I don’t have an iPhone or Apple Watch?
Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias’ office said they plan to offer the digital IDs to other digital wallets such as Google Wallet for Android users but did not provide a date.
