SUMMARY:IDnext Lunch Break: In transition to RBAC – revolution or evolution?
DESCRIPTION:Makro is the Dutch warehouse club for businesses\, foundations and associations. In its 17 stores Makro employs some 4000 customer-friendly staff. Moreover\, Makro is the largest supplier of Christmas boxes in the Netherlands. \nIn order to conduct proper business operations\, daily access to applications and systems (through the internal and external networks) is requisite. This applies to current workers\, but also to new workers\, who – in these unusual times –  need to be onboarded in the organisation quickly. \nThe access to information must be restricted to persons who or systems that are authorised to view or alter the information. In this respect\, (both internal and external) workers are often distinguished by their role in the organisation. \nRole-based Access Control (RBAC) is one approach that can be applied in this instance.\nOn the basis of their roles\, workers will be granted only those access rights that they need in order to fulfil their tasks (need to know). If access rights are granted too ‘loosely’\,  there is the risk of unauthorised access. However\, a role model that has been set too ‘strictly’ can result in a plethora of roles\, causing an unworkable situation\, but rendering the access by new devices (telephones\, tablets and laptops) much easier and safer. \nDuring this online IDnext Lunch Break\, we will discuss the transformation of the use of RBAC at Makro Nederland. What ideas are there for applying RBAC? What are the challenges? And how do you get the organisation to use RBAC? \nNote for non-Dutch speakers: the language of the lunchbreak is Dutch.
